About

A law student short of money agrees to an arrangement with a wealthy man more than twice her age, and finds it cannot be kept separate from the rest of her life.

Kara Jones is a bright student from a middle-income family, working towards a law degree and waiting tables part time to pay for it. When she is offered an internship, the sums stop adding up: she cannot take the placement and keep the job that covers her bills.

Her roommate Lea shows her another way. Lea moves in a circle of "sugar daddies", older men who hand over money in return for company and favours. With the pressure mounting, Kara enters into an arrangement of her own with Grant Zager, a 55-year-old businessman.

Kara tries to keep her relationship with Grant a secret. The two halves of her life meet head on anyway, and the damage reaches her family and her own future. The danger is not only to her reputation: one of the young women in the same circle ends up dead, and Kara is left trying to work out what happened.

Sugar Daddies (2014) was written by Barbara Kymlicka, who went on to co-write Double Daddy (2015), and comes from the same producers.

Production

Sugar Daddies was directed by Doug Campbell from a screenplay by Barbara Kymlicka, and produced by Ken Sanders and Robert Ballo, with Timothy O. Johnson as executive producer. Leigh Lisbão Underwood was director of photography, Bob Joyce edited the film and Steve Gurevitch wrote the music.

The film sits alongside Babysitter's Black Book (2015), made by the same producers a few months later, as a story about young women who turn to older men for money. The same team also made Double Daddy (2015) and Double Mommy (2016).
