Resident Evil (2026)

About

Bryan Hodukavich is a medical courier with one job: get a package to a hospital in Raccoon City. He is not a police officer, a soldier or anyone the Umbrella Corporation has ever heard of, and the film's central idea is to drop the least qualified person available into the worst night the city will ever have.

The outbreak is already under way when his delivery goes wrong, and what follows is close to a single unbroken chase. Bryan has to cross a city filling up with the infected, and with things considerably worse than the infected, while a group of Umbrella scientists waits at the other end for what he is carrying and an Umbrella enforcer works to clean up the company's mess. The story runs alongside the events of the second game rather than retelling them, so the familiar setting comes without the familiar heroes.

Zach Cregger directs from a script he wrote with Shay Hatten, and at 94 minutes it is a deliberately stripped-down film: one man, one package, one night. It is the first live-action Resident Evil film to start again from scratch since Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), and it carries no continuity from that film or from the six Milla Jovovich films that began with Resident Evil (2002).

Cast and characters

Austin Abrams plays Bryan Hodukavich, the courier, and is on screen for almost the whole film. Sara Paxton is heard as his girlfriend Michelle.

Jo Martin plays hospital receptionist Andrea Vasquez and Johnno Wilson is Deputy Sheriff Wilson. Kellen Goff provides the creature vocals.

Critical Reception

Reviews were the best the series has ever had, by a wide margin. Critics credited Cregger with working out how to put the experience of playing the games on screen, rather than their plots, and praised the film's pace, its scares and the way it uses comedy to release tension without undercutting it. Austin Abrams's turn as an ordinary man hopelessly out of his depth was widely singled out. It scored 79 out of 100 on Metacritic from 51 critics, and audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a B+.
